Thumbling Review: A Must-Try or Overrated Dumpling Spot?

The Wait: Testing Patience

Thumbling had us waiting for about 95 minutes on a busy Saturday evening.

The question is, does the food justify the long wait?

Modern Ordering, with a Twist

At Thumbling, you order via QR code. It’s a tech-savvy method, but might be a challenge for those less comfortable with digital tools.

Don’t forget, adding extras like ginger comes at an additional cost.

Their menu features some unique items. The salted egg custard xiao long bao, a highlight, was intriguingly sweet. We also tried their shrimp and yellow chive dumplings.

The dumplings themselves were tasty, but we found the accompanying sauce overly sweet. The dumplings could have used a bit more spice, but the chili oil helped.

The Xiao Long Bao

The XLB’s are great. They’re comparable to ones you’ll find at Din Tai Fung for sure.

It’s also great that you can get them in sets of 5. Perfect if you’ve got a table of 2.

Portion Sizes and Flavor Comparison

Portions here are generous, especially the fried rice, which was fluffy and REALLY flavorful. We actually think this tastes better than the one you find at Din Tai Fung.

The cucumber dish stood out with its heavy sesame oil seasoning.

However, some items didn’t quite match up to Din Tai Fung in terms of flavor balance.

Beverage Options and Overall Value

The honey green tea, ordered with half sugar, offered a refreshing balance.

It’s good quality tea for a reasonable price. Also, water bottles are available for purchase.

Final Thoughts

With a total bill of $74.49, Thumbling offers value for money compared to similar orders at Din Tai Fung. The service is efficient, and the food arrives quickly.

While some dishes were a hit, others didn’t quite meet our expectations. We’re considering a return visit, maybe for a takeout next time to avoid the wait.
